7 Days Lake Turkana Adventure

What to Expect

The tour begins on the foothills of Mt Kenya as we proceed towards the cool and misty environs of Marsabit; before traversing the Chalbi desert towards the largest desert lake in the world (Lake Turkana). Thereafter we visit the small settlement of Ngurunit where we enjoy the scenery and adventure at the base of Ndoto Mountains. Our final destination before returning to Nairobi is Samburu game reserve with its unique group of animals only found in the North of Kenya. On this tour you will come across numerous tribes who call this remote region their home; from the vibrant Samburu tribe, to the Rendille, Turkana to one of the smallest tribes in Kenya (the el molo people).

Day 1

Nairobi to Mt Kenya

Depart Nairobi in the early morning and proceed towards the slopes of Africa's second largest mountain at 5,199m - Mt Kenya and check in at the lodge based on the foothills of the Mountain. The afternoon is spent at leisure; optional activities include walk to Maumau Caves with a guide, cycling, horse riding and boating offered at the lodge.

The Mau Mau Cave was used by Kenyan freedom fighters as a hideout from British soldiers during the Mau Mau Uprising of 1952 to 1960. This pleasant 9km walk through wild bushes and indigenous trees is located at the foothills of Mt Kenya and open out to a beautiful waterfall and Burguret River. The area is also home to baboons, Colobus monkeys and other species. Dinner and overnight back at the lodge. (Lunch & dinner included)

Day 2

Mt. Kenya to Marsabit

After breakfast we depart for Marsabit town and environs. Enjoy a scenic drive as you depart Nanyuki looking out for colorful fields approaching Isiolo, the magnificent Mount ololokwe (Samburu sacred mountain) before arriving at Marsabit. We visit Lake Paradise and Little Lake inside Marsabit national park. Here, an indigenous forest and a desert come together to create the most compelling landscape on earth. The dense forest in the park is also home to elephants, kudu, water buck and a variety of birds. You may visit the town on foot in the late afternoon as well. Overnight in an en-suite budget hotel in town. (Breakfast, lunch & dinner included).

Overnight back at the budget hotel in town (breakfast, lunch & dinner included).

Day 5

Lake Turkana to Ngurunit

After breakfast, we begin the long journey towards Ngurunit driving past the Turkana Wind farm. The scenery is breathtaking. Ngurunit is an oasis surrounded by the Ndoto Mountains and home to Samburu and rendille tribes. Depending on the time we arrive; there is the option for you to enjoy a short walk up the Ndoto streams to the natural swimming pools for a swim and slide (weather dependent). Bring out your inner child as you enjoy this refreshing and fun experience! Alternatively enjoy an optional sunset nature walk to take in the beautiful surroundings. Overnight at basic accommodation (shared washrooms) (breakfast, lunch & dinner included).

Day 6

Ngurunit to Samburu

Enjoy breakfast as we make an optional visit to the womens basket project to buy some souvenirs. We may visit the rock slides if the previous day did not permit before beginning the journey towards Samburu passing the magnificent Mount Ololokwe en route.

These animals are only found in the North of Kenya; being the Grevys zebra, Somali ostrich, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk and the Beisa Oryx.  Be sure to look out for them on your game drive as well as lions and various other wildlife.
