About Watamu Marine National Park
Established in 1968 and designated a UN World Biosphere Reserve in 1979, this was one of Kenya’s first marine parks (together with Malindi Marine Park). It has coral gardens that are homes to over 600 fish species, 110 stony coral and countless invertebrates, crustaceans and molluscs. The brain corals, fan corals and sponges, provide nutrients to the over 1,000 fish species. The park is also home to the highly endangered sea turtles (including the migratory leatherback turtles). Other attractions in the nearby areas include Mida Creek, Temple Point, Vasco Da Gama Pillar, Gedi Ruins, Tsavo East National Park, Mombasa Marine Park, Watamu & Malindi beaches and Arabuko-Sokoke Forest
